Lights Out over Margate

The bright yellow lights which have illuminated Margate seafront with the word "Dreamland" for decades have been taken down. The mist which enveloped the town today hid this sad turn of events from most, and was probably sent by the gods to shield our tender souls.
There's a chance they might be replaced with more modern and reliable lights, especially as they've seldom all been lit simultaneously in recent years.

Waste not want not... can we not have them re-cycled onto the river frontage of the palace of weatminster.....?

Who allowed them to do that?

As someone who cannot remember a time when it wasn't there, the sign's always seemed an intergal part of the historic cinema brick 'fin', part of the Margate skyscape.

Do these people have no sense of history, heritage, retro-chic, nostalgia? What a bunch of winkers. Where is it now, why can't the Save Dreamland bunch preserve it for posterity?

I believe the letters are now in the yard of a Herne Bay sign company.

The official line from the building agents used by Waterbridge (the site owners) is that they've been removed for "maintenance and cleaning, and that it will therefore be reinstated". There's a little bit more about this on the forum at www.savedreamland.co.uk

The cinema is Grade II listed (as is the Scenic Railway) so it is likely they will return.

Thanks for the extra information Paul.
I'll add the save dreamland url to the links list.

Well that didn't last long.

The Thanet Times today has carried an article where the development company has stated that it now won't be repaired but will be replaced with a "better" one.

And there's me trying to be less cynical these days!
